Whilst in the UK, my husband and I ran a business specialising in high quality barn conversions and solid oak furniture. On our arrival in the Chamonix valley we bought a dilapidated farmhouse dating back over 200 years, which was in dire need of some care and attention. Over the next few years my husband rebuilt the farmhouse personally doing every aspect from the joinery work, roofing, the plumbing and plastering and the outside landscaping.
Through our business in the UK we had vast amounts of experience in converting old buildings and adapting them to modern requirements, however, it had not prepared us for the difference in building techniques. What is the norm in the UK is not necessarily how things are done here. Everything is different from the tools to the materials themselves.
